We put together this helpful local guide for our guests so they can get the most out of their Camp Hideaway stay. Both Camp Hideaway locations offer all kinds of onsite activities, and each town has its own seasonal events. Let’s take a look at what’s happening end of summer 2024.
Explore, Discover and Make Memories
Gruene
When in Gruene, you can’t miss the allure of the rivers. When temperatures rise, the cool, clean waters of the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers are the place to be, and there’s no better way to enjoy them than floating them!
Rockin’ R
Rent a tube or float as a group in rafts with Rockin’ R on either the Guadalupe River or Comal River—you choose! Prefer kayaking? They rent those too. Remember to pack a cooler and bring only reusable bottles and containers—no disposable containers allowed per city ordinances. Rockin’ R won Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award in 2024, so you can’t go wrong.
Texas Tubes
Texas Tubes offers a variety of tubes to float the 72-degree, crystal clear, spring-fed Comal River through October. Don’t miss their famous “Tube Chute” to enter the river. Float trips take approximately 3.5 hours, but you can float all day if you want. Their shuttle will pick you up and bring you back to where you started. Bring a cooler with reusable containers, and you are set!
Schlitterbahn Waterpark
Seeking adventure? Schitterbahn Waterpark in nearby New Braunfels offers miles of rivers fed by the Comal River’s natural spring water. Tap into your inner kid as you enjoy river rides, pools, waterslides, and “adventures from mild to wild.” The park is open daily through August and on weekends through September 15th.
Gruene Hall
Gruene is known primarily for two things: its rivers and great live music. Built in 1878, Gruene Hall is Texas’ oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall. With live music from artists you love and some you get to discover, Gruene Hall never disappoints. Don’t go hungry: there are plenty of dining options within walking distance
Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg boasts endless food and wine-oriented activities, live music concerts, art events and history and heritage events. Main Street offers a variety of shopping options and delicious restaurants serving up German and American food.
Luckenbach
Even if you’ve never been to Texas, you’ve likely heard of Luckenbach, an 1849 trading post-turned-live music venue made famous by “Willie, Waylon & The Boys.” It’s as authentic Texas as you can get. Grab a cold beer and a picnic table and enjoy music most afternoons and evenings.
Enchanted Rock
You could spend the entire day at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and never get bored. The hiking trails extend nearly nine miles, and there are nature trails, interpretive exhibits, rock climbing, cave exploration, wildlife and more. As this is a popular attraction, it’s best to reserve a day pass prior to traveling to the park. Park hours are 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Grape Stomp
Ever stomp grapes? Fredericksburg is home to over 60 wineries, many of which offer visitors the opportunity to stomp grapes while sipping on amazing wine. Check out grape stomping at Wildseed Farms or Arrowhead Creek Vinyards, Grape Stomp and Paella Party at Texas Wine Collective. The grape stomping season ends Labor Day weekend.
Labor Day Weekend
Speaking of Labor Day, Fredericksburg is the perfect place to spend Labor Day weekend. Grape stomping is just the beginning. Many wineries will be hosting events; restaurants, bars and other venues will have live music; and there’s even a catfish fry to support the volunteer fire department. Take a look at all the fun here.
Where Will You Adventure?
Both Fredericksburg and Gruene offer experiences you won’t find anywhere else. As you plan your trip, remember to leave time to explore both areas on your own. You’ll find wonderful local stores, restaurants and cafes, artisans, activities, and events to immerse yourself in the culture.
There is so much to do in these areas, or you can choose to do nothing at all and just rest in the beautiful Texas Hill Country setting. When the big city hustle and bustle starts to wear, it’s great to know you have a small-town getaway beckoning you to return. We hope you enjoy your stay with Camp Hideaway, and if there is anything we can do to help you enjoy these areas more, please let us know.
